The Mid-Wife


A mid wife has come for a visit
to birth in me something new
I can hardly stand the pain
as she tells me what I should do.

Now I find I must trust
when in the past all have betrayed
now I find I must trust
that this baby she will not slay.

I find myself wanting to protect
All that I have known to be dear
I find myself not wanting to listen
to the sifting of all the fear.

A midwife has come for a visit
I believe she was sent by the Lord
I must learn to yield to the wisdom
Of one who has done this before.

Once upon a time there was a serpent who was badly injured in a fight with another animal. It managed to slither away to safety but would have surely died if a benevolent man had not seen it suffering by the side of the road.
